Kinja'd!!!

So yesterday was TNIA at Lime Rock Park, my first ever time driving LRP and my first time at a track I haven’t driven without an instructor. It didn’t go well the first session lol I mean it was fine but I had no idea what lines to take and I was all over the damn place. Session 2 went much better but I was still struggling a bit on turn 1 and 2 and the stupid uphill.

Finally session 3 I got to follow this 987 Cayman S with a Turbo. I have a 981 Cayman S with a cobb tune. He knew the track so I just followed him the best I could and Holy Hell it was amazing. I really kept up mostly, was consistent, and FAST (ish). Never got to follow such an equal car for so long before. Can't say I much like LRP though compared to Palmer, but this was my best track experience so far.

Nice! Did you try watching a bunch of lap videos before you went? I’ve found that helpful in the past for memorizing the turns and at least getting some idea in your head of where you’re supposed to be before you get out there.

My first session on the 3.1 as MSR-Cresson was a similarly “lost”- feeling experience - ha!

Actually, I like your lines better than the Cayman’s. The Cayman likes to drive in to turns, brake hard and turn hard. The problem with that is by my reasoning if you can turn hard and not spin , haven’t you over braked for the turn?

I am for carrying more speed into the turn and try to be at the limit as you rotate in a more gentle fashion. In otherwords be on the edge of the friction circle throughout the turn.

It looked like you were catching him in Turn 3 left. And also at the bottom of the bridge hill before the straight. I think in both cases he overbraked so he could do a sharper turn in which might feel fast but not be fast.

Yeah we talked about our lines and he said some other people showed him that line and he liked it. I still preferred mine though for my style and maybe my tire/suspension was different enough.

Thanks though!

I watched videos, read the "turn by turn", and memorized the shape but OMG the hill in real life was tough to go from video/2D. Also I had my turn 2 to 3 messed up a bit in my head until I corrected myself. Got my head up finally too!

Glad you found a “buddy” to show you the good line!

I can’t correct him, if it makes him feel comfortable that’s fine but I’ll comment that hard braking and hard turning is not fast. If you watch the IMSA sedan sports cars, they all carry the friction circle. and were they to turn in that hard as he does they would spin.

Watching the Cayman reminded me of a BMW I once raced who did exactly that. For example at Road America at 14 drive straight to the the turn and take a hard turn. He wasn’t even trying for the apex. I am sure he was coached that the guy first on the gas on a long straight wins. But the problem was I would almost drive over the top of him because he was slow compared to me. Sure he was first on the gas but I was probably 2 mph faster at apex and back on the gas myself within 4 tenths of a second.

Watch the guys in pro racing and they don’t jerk cars like that,,,,,

Yeah I much prefer a smooth drive on the limit than some sort of autocross version of track driving. I don't have enough experience to see what you see for him but it REALLY makes sense that he should be faster. He said with the turbo he was putting down about 400 whp whereas I should be around 300, and the same weight.
